Know where you stand before you apply

Your credit score decides which lenders will consider you and what rate they will quote. Check it here at no cost — it is a soft enquiry, so looking does not change the number.

Score bands

What your number actually means

  • Needs work

Most mainstream lenders will decline. Secured options — a gold loan or a card against a fixed deposit — are the practical route back.

  • Fair

Approvals happen, usually at higher rates and lower amounts. A few months of clean repayment moves this band quickly.

  • Good

Comfortably approvable with most partners at standard rates. Worth negotiating on fee rather than accepting the first offer.

  • Excellent

The best rates on the panel, faster processing and higher limits. Ask for the rate you want — you have room.

What moves it

The four things bureaus weigh

  • Highest impact

    Repayment history

Whether you have paid EMIs and card dues on time. A single seriously late payment can take months to work off.

  • High impact

    Credit utilisation

How much of your available card limit you use. Keeping usage well below the limit consistently is one of the fastest levers you control.

  • Moderate impact

    Credit age and mix

A longer history and a healthy mix of secured and unsecured credit both help. Closing your oldest card can actually hurt.

  • Lower impact

    New enquiries

Each application for credit leaves a hard enquiry. Several in a short window read as credit hunger and pull the score down.

Improving it

What actually works, and how fast

Credit scores respond to behaviour over months, not days — but some levers move faster than others, and knowing which is worth your attention matters when you are planning an application.

Fastest: bring down card utilisation

Utilisation is calculated on your current balance against your limit, with no memory of the past. Clearing a card down from near its limit to well below the limit can show up in the next reporting cycle. If you are applying for a loan in a month or two, this is the single most useful thing you can do.

Slower but decisive: a clean repayment record

Missed payments carry the most weight and fade the most slowly. There is no way to accelerate this beyond paying on time, every time, and letting the record build. Setting up auto-debit for at least the minimum due removes the most common cause of accidental damage.

Worth doing once: check your report for errors

Reports can carry loans that were closed years ago, balances that were settled, or accounts that were never yours. Disputing an error with the bureau is free, and correcting one can move a score more than months of good behaviour.

Avoid: applying to several lenders at once

Each formal application leaves a hard enquiry, and a cluster of them reads as credit hunger. Comparing offers through a marketplace uses a soft enquiry instead, which is exactly why it is worth narrowing your choice before you apply anywhere.

FAQs

Credit score questions, answered

Does checking my credit score lower it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry — it is visible only to you and has no effect on the score. Only a hard enquiry, made when you formally apply for credit, is recorded on your report and visible to other lenders.

What is a good credit score?

Higher is better. Most lenders treat a good score as comfortably approvable, and reserve their best rates for excellent scores. Below that, approvals become harder and pricing worsens — though secured credit remains available.

How often is my score updated?

Credit bureaus refresh their records as lenders report, typically monthly. A change you make today — clearing a card balance, for example — usually shows up in the following reporting cycle rather than immediately.

How can I improve my credit score?

Pay every EMI and card bill on time, keep card utilisation well below your limit, avoid multiple credit applications in a short period, keep your oldest account open, and check your report for errors and have them corrected.

What if my credit report has a mistake?

Raise a dispute with the credit bureau that issued the report. They are required to investigate with the lender that supplied the data and correct anything that cannot be substantiated. Errors on loan status and outstanding balances are the most common, and they are worth pursuing.

Can I get a loan with no credit history at all?

Yes, though the options narrow. Secured borrowing — a gold loan, or a credit card against a fixed deposit — does not depend heavily on a score, and using either responsibly builds the history that opens up unsecured credit later.
