Insurance

The right cover, explained before you buy

Insurance is only worth what it pays at claim time. Each page below sets out the kinds of policy available, what they cover and exclude, and what to weigh when comparing quotes — so you choose on the policy wording, not just the premium.

Before you buy

How to choose cover

Protect against what would hurt most

Start with the losses your household could not absorb: a hospital stay, the loss of an earning member's income, or a liability you cause on the road. Health, term life and third-party motor cover deal with those first. Travel and home cover come next.

Buy enough cover, not just a policy

Too little cover leaves you paying most of a large claim yourself. Size health cover to treatment costs in the city you live in, and term cover to the years your family would depend on your income.

Read the exclusions and limits

Waiting periods, sub-limits, co-payments and deductibles decide what a policy pays. Two policies at the same premium can pay very different amounts on the same claim.

Disclose everything

Declare existing illnesses, habits such as smoking, and previous claims. Non-disclosure is one of the most common reasons a claim is turned down.

FAQs

Insurance questions, answered

Does PaisaFin sell insurance itself?

No. Policies are issued and underwritten by IRDAI-registered insurers. PaisaFin helps you understand the options and connects you with a partner, and the policy contract is always between you and the insurer.

Which insurance should I buy first?

For most households: health insurance for everyone in the family, term life cover if anyone depends on your income, and the motor cover the law requires for your vehicles. Travel and home cover come next, depending on your plans and what you own.

Why is a cheaper premium not always the better policy?

A lower premium often means more exclusions, longer waiting periods, co-payments or caps that cut what the policy pays at claim time. Compare the policy wording and the insurer's claim settlement record, not just the price.

What is the free-look period?

A window after you receive a new policy in which you can review it and cancel if it does not suit you, with a refund of the premium less certain deductions. The policy document states how long it lasts.

How do I complain about an insurer?

Start with the insurer's grievance officer. If you are not satisfied with the response, you can escalate through IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal or approach the Insurance Ombudsman.
