Travel insurance
Compare travel insurance before your next trip
A hospital stay abroad can cost far more than the trip itself, and your Indian health policy usually will not pay for it. Travel insurance covers medical emergencies overseas along with the everyday things that go wrong — delayed flights, lost baggage, a stolen passport. Some countries require it for a visa, and Schengen visas specify a minimum level of cover.
Your options
Types of travel insurance
Single trip
Cover for one journey, from departure until you return home.
Multi-trip annual
One policy for all your trips in a year, each up to a set length. Good value for frequent travellers.
Student travel
Longer cover for studying abroad, often including study interruption and sponsor protection.
Senior citizen travel
Plans designed for older travellers, with medical cover suited to their needs.
Domestic travel
Cover for trips within India — delays, cancellations, baggage and accidents.
Cover
What is covered — and what is not
This is what policies of this kind commonly include. The policy wording of the plan you choose is what decides a claim.
Usually covered
- Emergency medical treatment and hospitalisation abroad
- Emergency evacuation and repatriation
- Trip cancellation, interruption and flight delays
- Loss or delay of checked-in baggage
- Loss of passport and travel documents
- Personal liability abroad
Usually not covered
- Pre-existing conditions, unless the plan specifically includes them
- Travel against medical advice, or to seek treatment
- Adventure sports, unless you add cover for them
- Losses from leaving belongings unattended

How to compare travel insurance quotes
Medical cover
Healthcare in the US, Canada and much of Europe is very expensive. Buy medical cover suited to the countries you are visiting.
Visa requirements
Check the minimum cover and any wording your destination's embassy requires before you buy.
Deductibles
Many travel policies deduct a fixed amount from each claim. Lower deductibles mean smaller out-of-pocket costs.
Assistance service
A round-the-clock helpline that arranges cashless treatment abroad matters most when something goes wrong.
Paperwork
Documents you will need
Insurers may ask for more depending on the plan and your answers on the proposal form.

FAQs
Travel insurance questions, answered
Does my health insurance cover me abroad?
Most Indian health policies cover treatment only in India. A few include overseas emergency cover as an add-on, but a dedicated travel policy is the usual way to be protected.
When should I buy travel insurance?
As soon as you book. Trip cancellation cover only protects you from the date the policy starts, so buying early covers more of what can go wrong.
